How is Schwab Licensed in the U.K.?

Charles Schwab, U.K., Limited ("Schwab UK") is authorised and regulated by the Financial Services Authority ("FSA"), the U.K.'s financial services regulator of 25 North Colonnade, Canary Wharf, London E14 5HS.

Also, Schwab UK is designated under U.S. regulations as a foreign branch office of. Charles Schwab & Co., Inc. ("Schwab").

Schwab is not authorised to carry on investment business in the U.K., but is regulated under U.S. securities law, is registered with the Securities Exchange Commission ("SEC") as a broker-dealer, and is a member of the Financial Industry Regulatory Authority (“FINRA”). What does this mean to you when you open an account?

In establishing a US$ denominated brokerage account Schwab UK will introduce you to Schwab. The account will be held and operated in the U.S.A. by Schwab. In addition, certain services may be performed for you by Schwab UK staff on behalf of Schwab.

This means that all or most of the protections provided by the U.K. regulatory system do not apply, but U.S. securities protections do. Although there is no coverage by the U.K. Financial Services Compensation Scheme, there is coverage under the U.S. SIPC scheme (Securities Investor Protection Corporation). CS&Co is a member of SIPC. Explanatory brochure available upon request or at www.sipc.org.

CSUK treats all clients as “Retail Clients” except those clients who request and are eligible to be treated as “Professional Clients" on an elective opted-up basis.
